Is Pain, Injury or a Change in Your Physical Function Affecting How You Live?

Hennie Ng, Physical Therapist in Richmond, BC

You may be recovering from an injury or surgery but still feel weak, stiff or uncertain about returning to your usual activities.

Perhaps recurring back, neck, shoulder, hip or joint pain is affecting your work, sleep or ability to exercise. You may also be navigating bladder leakage, pelvic discomfort, pregnancy, postpartum changes or persistent core concerns.

Even after trying rest, exercises or previous treatment, you may not feel as comfortable, strong or confident as you would like.

You deserve care that considers more than one painful area or isolated symptom.

We provide personalized physiotherapy to help you understand what may be contributing to your concerns, restore function and develop practical strategies for moving forward.

Orthopaedic and

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Your pain or injury can affect far more than one part of your body. It can interfere with your work, sleep, exercise, family responsibilities and confidence in movement.

We provide physiotherapy for concerns such as:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Shoulder, hip and knee concerns

  • Muscle, tendon and joint injuries

  • Repetitive-strain and overuse conditions

  • Reduced mobility, strength or balance

  • Pain affecting work, sleep or exercise

  • Difficulty returning to activity following an injury

  • Weakness, stiffness or reduced function after surgery

Care may include education, hands-on treatment, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining and practical self-management strategies.

For individuals recovering from surgeries, rehabilitation is adapted to the individual needs, stage of healing, medical guidance, recommendations and client goals.

What to Expect When You Begin Physiotherapy

We Start With a Personalized Assessment

Your care begins with a conversation about what you are experiencing, how your concerns affect your life and what you would like to return to doing.

We will ask about your relevant health history, symptoms, previous treatment, daily activities and personal goals. This helps identify the factors that may be contributing to your concerns and guides the next steps in your care.

We Explore Relevant Movement and Function

Depending on your concerns, your assessment may explore mobility, strength, posture, breathing, balance, core function, movement patterns and other factors related to your symptoms.

We will explain what we observe in clear, supportive language so you can better understand what may be contributing to your concerns.

We Develop a Plan Together

Your recommendations will be based on your assessment, symptoms, health history, daily life and goals, not a generic collection of exercises.

Your treatment plan may include education, hands-on care, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining and practical strategies for supporting your recovery between appointments.

You will be encouraged to ask questions, express your preferences and participate in decisions about your care.

Special Areas of Care

Alongside general orthopaedic and post-surgical physiotherapy, Hennie has a special interest in women's health, pelvic floor rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation and trauma-informed care.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

The pelvic floor is closely connected to bladder, bowel, sexual and core function.

We provide personalized pelvic health physiotherapy for individuals navigating
concerns such as:

  • Bladder leakage and urinary urgency

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Pelvic pain

  • Painful intercourse

  • Pregnancy-related pelvic, hip or back pain

  • Postpartum core and pelvic-floor recovery

  • Abdominal separation and persistent core concerns

  • Difficulty returning to exercise after childbirth

  • Changes in pelvic floor muscles during perimenopause and menopause

Care may include education, hands-on treatment, therapeutic exercise, movement retraining and practical self-management strategies.

For individuals recovering from surgery, rehabilitation is adapted to the surgery, stage of healing, medical recommendations and personal goals.

Hennie Ng, Physical Therapist in Richmond, BC

Care may include pelvic-health education, external assessment and when clinically appropriate and with informed consent, internal pelvic-floor assessment.

Treatment may also incorporate hands-on care, breathing, pelvic-floor coordination, core rehabilitation, functional movement and nervous-system regulation.

Our approach extends beyond isolated pelvic-floor muscle training. We consider how breathing, core function, movement, pain, stress and an individual’s broader health experience may influence pelvic-health concerns.

When clinically appropriate, physiotherapy intervention will also include PfilAtes and trauma-informed therapeutic Yoga to support functional progression—helping you rebuild strength, balance, mobility, and confidence as you return to work, sports, and the activities you love.

Understand Your Assessment Options

For pelvic-health concerns, we recommend beginning with a virtual pelvic health physiotherapy appointment, available to patients physically located in British Columbia.

Pelvic-health symptoms can feel personal, complex or difficult to discuss. Beginning virtually provides a private and comfortable opportunity to share your concerns, ask questions and understand your care options before deciding whether an in-person appointment is needed.

Together we can discuss:

  • The pelvic-health symptoms you are experiencing

  • When and how your symptoms began

  • Pregnancy, birth, surgery or other relevant health experiences

  • Bladder, bowel, sexual, pelvic-floor or core concerns

  • Pain, pressure, tension or changes in function

  • Activities that improve or aggravate your symptoms

  • Previous treatment and strategies you have already tried

Hennie Ng, Physical Therapist in Richmond, BC

We can then help determine the most appropriate next step. This may include continued virtual physiotherapy, an in-person appointment or further assessment.

If an in-person pelvic-health assessment is recommended, we will explain whether an external assessment of pelvic-floor activation, breathing patterns and movement, or an internal assessment of pelvic-floor muscle tone and strength may be clinically indicated based on your concerns.

An internal pelvic-floor assessment is never automatically required. It will only be considered when clinically indicated, explained beforehand and completed with your informed consent.

Benefits of Virtual Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Begin in a Familiar and Private Environment

Discussing bladder, bowel, sexual or pelvic-health symptoms may feel easier from the privacy and comfort of your own home.

Receive Education and Practical Strategies

Many elements of pelvic health physiotherapy do not require hands-on treatment.

  • Pelvic-health education

  • Bladder and bowel habit guidance

  • Pain science education

  • Nervous-system regulation strategies

  • Breathing coordination and pressure management strategies

Reduce Travel and Scheduling Barriers

Determine the Most Appropriate Next Step

  • Continued virtual pelvic health physiotherapy

  • An in-person pelvic-floor activation, breathing-pattern and movement assessment completed externally

  • An in-person internal pelvic-floor muscle tone and strength assessment, when clinically indicated and consented to

  • A combination of virtual and in-person care

Referral to another appropriate healthcare professional

The recommended pathway will depend on your symptoms, goals, preferences and clinical needs.

Physiotherapy That Considers the Bigger Picture

Pain and movement concerns do not always exist in isolation. Strength, mobility, breathing, pelvic health, sleep, stress, previous injuries, surgery and everyday demands can all influence how the body feels and functions. Rooted in a biopsychosocial model of care, we consider both your physical symptoms and the broader circumstances affecting your health and recovery. The goal is not simply to give you more exercises. It is to help you understand your body and create a personalized, sustainable path forward.
